India’s medal count on Day 1: 5 gold, 8 silver, 3 bronze

Pokhara (Nepal), December 2 

India opened their medal account in the 13th South Asian Games (SAG) with 16 medals, including five gold, eight silvers and three bronze on the opening day of competitions.

Adarsha MN Sinimol gave India the first gold by winning the men’s individual triathlon event while compatriot Bishworjit Srikhom took the silver in a 1-2 finish for the country. Thoudam Sorojini Devi and Mohan Pragnya added one silver and one bronze in the women’s individual event. The individual triathlon event consists of continuous three legs of 750m swim, 20km bike race and a 5km run.

Sinimol clocked 1 hour 2.51 minutes  to win the gold in the men’s event while Bishworjit was second in 1:02:59. Basanta Tharu of Nepal took the bronze in 1:03:06.

In the women’s individual event, Sorojini clocked 1:14:00 to finish second behind Sony Gurung of Nepal, who took the gold in 1:13:45. Another Indian, Pragnya, clocked 1:14:57 to win the bronze. 

Shuttlers win gold

The men’s and women’s badminton teams expectedly claimed gold medals after beating Sri Lanka in their respective finals.  The men’s team, led by Kidambi Srikanth, defeated Sri Lanka 3-1 in the finals, while the women’s side blanked the same opponents 3-0 in the summit clash to make it a double bonanza for India.

Kho-kho boys in semis

The men’s kho-kho team entered the semifinals after clinching two wins in a day. India first thrashed hosts Nepal by an innings and 12 points (17-5) and later beat Bangladesh by an innings and two points (12-10). India take on Sri Lanka in the semifinals tomorrow. In the other semifinal, Nepal will take on Bangladesh.

Nepal’s Anjali Chand takes 6/0 in women’s T20I

Nepal’s Anjali Chanda scripted history by producing the best bowling performance in the women’s T20Is with figures of six wickets for zero runs against Maldives. This is the first time a bowler has taken six wickets for no run in any international match. Nepal won the match by 10 wickets, reaching 17 for no loss in five balls of the first over. Anjali broke the record of Malaysian Mas Elysa, who had claimed 6/3 from her four overs against China in January this year.  — PTI
