Yashaswini clinches ninth Olympics quota with gold

Haryana shooter Yashaswini Singh Deswal (in pic) secured India’s ninth Olympics quota  after she fired her way to the women’s 10m air pistol gold in the ISSF World Cup. The 22-year-old former junior world champion recorded 236.7 in the eight-women final of the season’s fourth World Cup for pistol and rifle shooters. World No. 1 Olena Kostevych of Ukraine claimed the silver with 234.8, while Serbia’s Jasmina Milavonovic bagged the bronze with 215.7. Yashaswini, a student of economics, had also topped the qualifications by a mile, aggregating a score of 582. Annu Raj Singh (572) and Shweta Singh (568) bowed out in the qualifications, while Manu Bhaker shot an impressive 580 in the Minimum Qualification Score (MQS).

Shot-putter Toor wins silver in Czech Republic

Asian Games gold medallist shot putter Tejinderpal Singh Toor clinched silver with a best throw of 20.09m in his last attempt during an athletics meet at Decin, Czech Republic. Toor, who was awarded with the Arjuna Award this year, couldn’t meet the World Championships standard but his effort was good enough to earn him a silver at the event. The 24-year-old Indian, who has a personal best of 20.75m, has already qualified for World Championships being the area champion following his gold-winning feat at the Asian Athletics Championships in April this year.

The much-delayed 36th National Games will be staged in Goa from October 20 to November 4 next year, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said. IOA finalised the dates during its meeting with the Goan delegation on Saturday. “It was finalised in a meeting here today and the National Games will be held in October-November next year. The Goan officials have promised that they will have all the facilities and infrastructure ready this time,” IOA secretary-general Rajeev Mehta said.
