With a little more than a year left for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, India’s brightest medal hope in wrestling, Vinesh Phogat, has decided to get married to a former wrestler friend Somvir Rathi of Jind on December 13.
The Ladies Sangeet is on December 12 and the reception of baraat is on December 13. Vinesh, 24, on Saturday, won the national title after making a comeback from an elbow injury suffered before the Budapest World Championships.
Vinesh’s cousin Rahul Phogat confirmed the development, saying, “After the engagement, both of them decided to get married soon. There is almost one year for Tokyo Olympics and Vinesh is focused on winning gold there.” Vinesh got engaged to former national-level wrestler Somvir a week after becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win the Asian Games gold in Jakarta. Vinesh and Rathi know each other since the last seven years and are currently employed with Indian Railways as Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE). They are even family friends. Vinesh’s uncle Mahavir Phogat and Rathi’s father, both former wrestlers, are close friends since long.
