Amritsar, October 28

Vishwakarma Day was celebrated with fervour here on Monday.

Programmes were organised to pay obeisance to Lord Vishwakarma. Many establishments were shut down to mark the day. Lord Vishwakarma is believed to be the architect of the universe and the day is observed following the Diwali day.

Workers cleaned tools and machines of their daily use, followed by a religious ceremony. Havans were performed and religious hymns were sung.

The Uttar Pradesh Kalyan Parishad organised a celebratory function. JP Singh, patron, said, “The members of the parishad, factory workers and labourers attended it. The members deliberated upon a memorandum of demands to be submitted to government officials and ministers.”

Sameer Khanna, a factory owner, said, “Every year, we observe the day. The factory is closed. Workers are given a break and the traditional ceremony is held.”

NN Joshi, educational adviser, Shri Ram Ashram Public School, said, “The reference of Lord Vishvarkarma is found in Hindu mythology and religious books. The picture of the lord can be found hanging in factories, construction sites, etc. He was the architect of buildings, places, etc.”
