London: Britain’s Prince Philip has apologised to a woman who broke her wrist after being involved in a car crash with the 97-year-old Duke’s Land Rover, saying that he is “deeply sorry” for the accident. Last week, Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, miraculously escaped unhurt in the accident when the Land Rover he was driving flipped onto its side after a collision with a car carrying two women and a baby. The Duke, in a letter to injured Emma Fairweather, said he was “very sorry” for his part in the accident and wished “a speedy recovery from a very distressing experience”, the Sunday Mirror reported. Indonesian tycoon known for Asia’s biggest default dies
Jakarta: Sinar Mas Group founder Eka Tjipta Widjaja, Indonesia’s fourth-richest person with a net worth of $9.3 billion, passed away at the age of 98 in Jakarta on Saturday. The Indonesian tycoon of Chinese origin is known for the $14-billion default by his flagship Asia Pulp & Paper, the worst corporate default in Asia, after the 1998 Asian financial crisis. While several of Sinar Mas’ businesses were taken over by the government after the fall of the dictatorship of General Suharto, Widjaja managed to rebuild his empire, which employs around 3.8 lakh people in Indonesia. His business empire is now run by his children and grandchildren. Agencies
Jackson’s estate slams ‘Leaving Neverland’ documentary
Los Angeles: Michael Jackson’s estate has hit out at documentary “Leaving Neverland”, based around the allegations of child sexual abuse against the late King of Pop, calling it a “tabloid character assassination”. The four-hour film, directed by Dan Reed, recently premiered at Sundance Film festival. It revisits the claims of Wade Robson and James Safechuck that Jackson sexually abused them when they were minors. Jackson died in 2009 of a propofol overdose. According to Variety, the pop star’s estate said film seeks to provide a platform to “admitted liars” to level their “uncorroborated allegations”. PTI
‘Top Chef’ contestant Fatima Ali passes away at 29
Karachi: Pakistani-American chef Fatima Ali, known for her 2017 appearance on popular US television series ‘Top Chef’, died on Friday after a nearly yearlong battle with a rare form of cancer. Her family confirmed the news via Ali’s social media account. “Fatima was at home with us, surrounded by her loved ones and beloved cat Mr Meow, when she left us in the early hours of the morning,” the post read. The 29-year-old chef, who was voted ‘fan favourite’ on ‘Top Chef’, had in October 2018 penned an op-ed for Bon Appetit, in which she shared that she had a year to live and intended to use it to make amends with the people in her life and to sample the finest food all over the world.
