As winter sets in, demand for woollens rises

The sharp drop in temperature, that too in the first month of its arrival, has brought cheers to manufacturers of shawl, blankets, tweed, blazers, mufflers and other woolen products. Retailers are witnessing spike in their sales. Dry fruit and spice traders are also seeing higher sales.

A shawl manufacturer Piara Lal Seth, who is also president of the Shawl Club of India, said tremendous demand woollen apparels was generated from India in general and North India in particular after Diwali. He said most of the wholesalers were placing repeat orders to meet the surge in demand from retailers.

Raman Mehra, a blanket manufacturer, said they did not hike prices of woollen products, keeping in view the condition of the domestic market. He said the shift in weather was generating demand in the market which was facing liquidity shortage.

President of the Indo Foreign Chamber of Commerce BK Bajaj said post Diwali, there was some lull in demand of dry fruit in the domestic market. However, now the demand has picked up swiftly due to winters, coupled with the wedding season.

The local dry fruit market supplies a variety of dry fruit to markets of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bangalore and Chennai. Local traders import dry fruit from the US, Chile, Australia, Iran and Turkey through sea ports and by land through the ICP from Afghanistan.
