In a surprising twist, jalebis have become the unlikely stars of India’s political landscape. After BJP’s historic hat-trick win in Haryana, a top Union minister ended a key cabinet briefing with a cheeky remark: “Chaliye, jalebi khaatey hain” (Let’s go, and have jalebis). This sweet dig was aimed at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who had promised to promote Haryana-made delicacies globally and send jalebis to the Prime Minister if his party won the state.

However, the Congress party suffered a crushing defeat, contrary to exit poll predictions that favored their victory. BJP’s win was met with jubilation, and as a tongue-in-cheek response, they pledged to send jalebis to Rahul Gandhi instead.

Rahul Gandhi’s initial promise was made during an election campaign meeting in Gohana, Haryana, where he highlighted the famous jalebi seller, Matu Ram. Gandhi emphasised that Matu Ram’s jalebis should be sold across India and exported worldwide, generating employment opportunities.
