In a bid to woo journalists in West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections, the BJP has announced that it would introduce a monthly allowance of Rs 5,000 for accredited journalists if it comes to power in the state.Speaking at a meet-the-press event in Kolkata on Saturday, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said the proposed benefit would be extended uniformly to all eligible accredited journalists without any distinction.

“There will be no division among journalists. The scheme will be applicable to everyone who meets the eligibility criteria,” Bhattacharya said, adding in a lighter tone, “Whether those who write for us, and those who write against us — everyone is our friend.”

He further said, “The party respects the freedom and rights of the media and that the initiative is intended to provide financial assistance and a sense of security to members of the journalism fraternity.” However, he noted that the exact details and implementation framework would be finalised and shared later.

Bhattacharya, however, said while the proposed Rs 5,000 monthly allowance may not be a large sum, it is intended as a gesture of support rather than a complete financial remedy.
