Summer vacations are just 10 days away and students of government schools are yet to receive textbooks of eight subjects.

In the absence of the books, study has been getting affected for the past two months. Delayed in delivering textbooks has gradually becoming a common phenomenon as students did not receive the books of all subjects around this time in the previous academic session (2018-2019) as well.

While students of various government schools have been finding it difficult to study in the absence of books, teachers are equally bothered as they also find it difficult to make students understand concepts.

According to the information acquired from the regional book depot of the Education Department, textbooks of eight subjects of different classes have not arrived in the district.

In many schools, students of Class X have not received books of mathematics, Hindi and social studies (part-1) and English (main course). Similarly, students of Class VIII have not received books of mathematics and Punjabi.

Mostly, the textbooks of maths and Hindi have not arrived at government schools.

Moreover, officials of various primary schools have forwarded the demand to provide books to students, who were admitted late, but the department has failed to provide the same as well.

A few students have been provided books from the “book banks” (books of students who have advanced to the next class after passing the exam), but a majority of them are still to get textbooks.

Saajan Kumar (name changed), a student in a government school, said, “Without books, we keep looking at teachers and try to understand what they are teaching. But it has become difficult for me to understand the concepts, especially of mathematics. I face a lot of problems while doing my homework.”

Geetika (name changed), another student, said, “Now, summer vacations are approaching near. It seems that we will get books after holidays. It will definitely affect my performance during the exams in September.”

A majority of the government schools in the district have not received books of many subjects till now.

Baljit Kumar, DEO (Elementary), said, “Books of a few subjects have not arrived yet. I am visiting the head office soon to know the exact status of books.”
