Around 200 farmers belonging to various farm unions have been booked for blocking the Bathinda-Amritsar road while protesting against the Centre’s contentious agriculture Bills on Tuesday.

Two FIRs were registered. In the first case, the police stated that they had got a tip-off that around 400 farmers of 11 farmer unions held a protest at Kanhiya Chowk and blocked the highway. The police have registered a case against Kaka Singh Kotra, Baldev Singh Sandoha, Resham Singh Yatri of BKU (Sidhupur), Ram Karan Singh Rama, Dara Singh Maiserkhana and Surmukh Singh Salebrah of BKU (Lakhowal) and Maghar Singh of BKU (Kadian) under Sections 188, 269, 270 and 283 of the IPC and Section 51 of the Disaster Management Act at the Thermal police station.

In the second case, the police stated that the protesters had blocked the highway at Jeeda village. A case has been registered against Jagsir Singh president BKU (Mansa), Beant Singh, Sukhdarshan Singh, Balwinder Singh, Resham Singh, Bhola Singh, Karnail Singh and 200 unidentified persons at the Nehiawala police station.

Resham Singh, a member of BKU (Sidhupur) said: “It is a bid to suppress our voice. We are ready to go to jail. Our protest will continue till our demands are fulfilled and these anti-farmers Bills are taken back.” — TNS
