Faridkot, July 16

Under the Jal Shakti Abhiyan, a campaign to save and conserve water, over 35,000 school students on Tuesday took an oath to save and store water.

During the morning prayer on Tuesday, students in more than 150 government and private schools in the district took the solemn oath to conserve and not to waste even a single drop of water.

The Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India, has identified Faridkot as one of the 255 districts in the country which is facing the water crisis and a Jal Shakti Abhiyan with an agenda to focus on water conservation has been started in the district.

The first phase of the campaign has commenced in the country from July 1 and it will conclude on November 30.

The Jal Shakti Abhiyan focuses on five aspects — water conservation and rainwater harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies, reuse of water and recharging of structures, watershed development, and intensive afforestation, said Deputy Commissioner Kumar Saurav Raj, who is also the district coordinator of the project.

“Besides saving water, we have high hopes that these students will also exhort their family members to conserve water which is most precious necessity for the human life,” he said.

District Education Officer Baljeet Kaur said, “The Education Department has asked the school students to save water under Jal Shakti Abhiyaan campaign. Under this campaign, the school principal, staff and all employees, along with school students, have been asked to save water and make proper use of it. Seminars, painting and slogan competitions are also being organised on the importance of water. The purpose of the painting contest is to create a sense of water conservation in the children’s mind.”
