600-gram preterm baby wins 70-day battle at Sriganganagar hospital
Baby was suffering from severe respiratory problems, intestinal infection, jaundice and shock
Doctors and nursing staff at Sriganganagar district hospital in Rajasthan successfully treated a premature baby girl weighing 600 grams and discharged her after a 70-day hospital stay.
The baby was born at 26 weeks (nearly six months) of gestation to Mukesh Kainth and his wife Rekha, residents of the Golden City.
The baby was suffering from severe respiratory problems, intestinal infection, jaundice and shock.
“When the baby was born, we thought everything was over. But the hospital team encouraged us and told us we would fight together,” said Rekha.
The family belongs to a rural area with limited healthcare facilities, and the government hospital became their only option. The baby’s weight has now increased from 600 grams to 1,200 grams.
The treatment was led by Dr Pallavi Bansal, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, along with Dr Sanjay Rathi and Dr Pawan Goyal.
“These problems are common in premature babies, but saving a baby with such a low birth weight was a major challenge. We used advanced incubators, ventilators and continuous monitoring,” said Dr Bansal.
The baby has been discharged but will continue follow-up at the hospital.
