941 addicts get treatment at Barnala centre in 18 months

BARNALA: The de-addiction centre at the Civil Hospital has been proving a boon for addicts as it helps them shun drugs.

The de-addiction centre at the Civil Hospital has been proving a boon for addicts as it helps them shun drugs. A total of 941 patients have received treatment since January 2018.

A majority of them shunned drugs after getting admitted to the rehab centre.

According to the data, in 2018, a total of 726 patients were registered with the centre. Of them, a total of 536 were admitted for treatment under the supervision of the trained staff.

The remaining 190 patients were given medicine on a daily basis from the outdoor patient department (OPD). In 2019, as many as 215 new patients were registered with the centre.

Of them, 214 were admitted for treatment.

While sharing details, Barnala Deputy Commissioner (DC) Tej Partap Singh Phoolka said the centre was proving beneficial for drug addicts.

“The DAPO campaign against drugs has been initiated by the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to root out the drug menace and for rehabilitation of addicts by providing them free treatment. The authorities of private drug de-addiction centres have strictly been instructed to make sure that their clinics function as per the standard operating protocol. They have also been instructed to mark daily attendance of patients,” said the DC.

He added that OOAT clinics were also being functioned in the district to provide free treatment to drug addicts on a daily basis.

The DC said in these OOAT clinics, a specialist physiatrist had been appointed to provide medicines to addicts.
