On the 117th birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, the Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation Pakistan has demanded from the governments of India and Pakistan to award Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, to the national hero in recognition of his services in the sub-continent. The Foundation also said that the Pakistan government should confer the great martyr of undivided India with the Nishan-e-Pakistan, the highest civilian award of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Foundation chief Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi, the third generation scion of Qureshi family that had migrated from Abohar’s Sukhera Basti to Lahore at the anniversary celebrations in Lahore High Court, said that postage stamps with Bhagat Singh’s picture be issued and a highway would also be named after him.

Mian Ghulam Ullah Joyia, member of the executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar, was the chief guest at the function. Other participants included social leaders Shahid Naseer, Ali Mian Jan, Zubair Ahmad Farooq, Malik Asif Niswana and Hamoodur Rahman Awan.

Qureshi added Bhagat Singh was a national hero and his memory is still alive in our hearts. He was born in Pakistan and hanged on March 23, 1931, in Pakistan, while March 24 was written on the black warrant, which was issued by the Registrar of Lahore High Court.

He claimed, “I have the draft of that date safe, but the question arises that how the registrar got the powers. It is the discretion of the courts to issue black warrants, but Bhagat Singh’s blood was unjustly shed. This case should be re-heard because the legal requirements were not fulfilled in the case. There are five lawyers who have become dear to Allah in this case, but we have not got justice in this case. We reiterate hope for justice from the courts.”
