City remembers sacrifice of freedom fighters

A number of events were organised to observe the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev in the city on Saturday.

Finance Minister Manpreet Badal, along with Congress leaders, paid floral tributes to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev at Arya Samaj Chowk in the city. Manpreet Badal said, “Due to the sacrifice of these brave souls, we all are enjoying independence today. But, it is sad that to date, we have failed to create a country envisioned by them. We need to contribute in this regard.”

Congress leaders Khushbaz Singh Jattan and others also paid floral tributes to the martyrs at Congress Bhawan here. Later, he also paid tributes to them at Arya Samaj Chowk.

Former Bathinda Zila Parishad chairman and SAD leader Gurpreet Singh Maluka, along with SAD workers, also paid tributes to the martyrs at Arya Samaj Chowk. Maluka said, “We need to move ahead on the path shown by the martyrs. They sacrificed their lives for the country.”

Volunteers of NGO Sahara Jan Sewa wore yellow turbans and took out an awareness rally through the markets of the city to spread awareness among the people about the importance of the day. The volunteers also offered floral tributes to the statues of the three martyrs at Arya Samaj Chowk. Deputy Commissioner Praneet also paid tributes to the martyrs.

Baba Farid College organised a special function on the occasion. Dr Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal, chairman, BFGI, and Paramjit Kaur Dhaliwal, managing director, BFGI, attended the function as special guests.

On this occasion, an inter-college elocution competition dedicated to the martyrdom day was organised. Students of BFGI enthusiastically participated in the competition. They highlighted the revolutionary ideas and thinking of Shaheed Bhagat Singh through their speeches.

In the competition, Kulwinder Kaur bagged the position and Garima Gupta stood second. Manpreet Singh and Tanupreet Kaur jointly shared the third position.

Students and faculty members of Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa Girls’ College also paid floral tributes to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru at a special assembly.

Students sang patriotic songs and poems, highlighting the sacrifices made by the martyrs. Speaking on the occasion, Dean NK Gosain talked about the life and philosophy of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. He explained that Shaheed Bhagat Singh fought for the freedom of India and at the same time, he wanted that India should get rid of social evils prevalent in society. 

Principal Shailja Monga asked the students to learn the lesson of patriotism and sacrifice from the lives of martyrs. “The sacrifices of these great freedom fighters are light houses for all of us. We should follow their path so that we can enjoy freedom in the real sense,” she added. On the occasion, a seminar was organised to remember their sacrifices for the country.
