Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh will kick off the second phase of the state government’s farm debt-waiver scheme from his ancestral village, Mehraj, in Bathinda on January 22.

As per a release issued here on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner Praneet said the event would witness the launch of the second phase for the waiver of debt owed by farmers having 2.5 to 5 acres to various cooperative and commercial banks.

A team of the district administration visited Mehraj village to take stock of the preparations being made for the event.

The Deputy Commissioner said 11,328 farmers from Bathinda district would be benefitted as they would be extended a debt waiver of Rs 71.34 crore.

Out of these, 10,250 farmers owe Rs 57.98 crore to cooperative banks and 1,078 owe Rs 13.36 crore to commercial banks.

These farmers will be provided debt waiver certificates during the function. He said debt of Rs 274.66 crore of 42,490 farmers from Bathinda district had been waived off during the last 21 months of the state government.

The Deputy Commissioner assigned duties to officials of various departments to make the debt waiver event a grand success. SSP Dr Nanak Singh and ADC (General) Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu were also present on the occasion.
