Constable Veerpal Kaur, who won five medals in the recently held World police and Fire Games at Chengdu in China, on Friday again brought laurels to the state by winning a silver medal in the 400 m hurdles of the women event at the 59th Open National Athletics Championship at Ranchi in Jharkhand.
Her family says that the state government did not do anything to motivate her. Notably, Veerpal had won two gold medals and three silver medals in track and field events in China.
Veerpal, who belongs to a small agrarian family of Ghagga village in Muktsar district, has been in athletics since 2004. She had joined the Punjab Police as a constable in 2017 under the sports category. Her one brother is a constable in the Army, while the other has recently passed Class XII.
Jaswant Singh, uncle of Veerpal, said, “Every sportsperson needs motivation. However, neither our local MLA nor the district administration has honoured our child. Only the previous SSP had honoured Veerpal when she returned from China. Some senior politicians, including the Chief Minister and officers, had just made a tweet in this regard to congratulate her.”
On her recent achievement, the Punjab Police congratulated her on social media. Besides, former Malout MLA Harpreet Singh, who is a senior SAD leader, also congratulated the family.
