Farmer leaders associated with the BKU Sidhupur allegedly exchanged heated arguments with the Jaito SDM in her court room on Wednesday evening.

The incident took place when some farmers, who had courted arrest three days ago in support of their demands, were produced in the court.

It is alleged that the SDM asked them whether they want to obtain bail in the case, in which they were booked under Sections 107 and 151 of the CrPC.

Some BKU leaders, who were present in the court complex, opposed this “suggestive question” of the SDM. Thereafter, the farmer leaders started raising slogans against the court and the SDM.

Thereafter, senior police officers from Faridkot rushed to Jaito in the evening to control the situation.

For the past about four weeks, many farmers have been sitting on a dharna in Jaito. They have been demanding cancellation of FIRs and “Red Circle” entries in their revenue record for stubble burning. Besides, they have also been demanding withdrawal of penalties imposed on them.

Intensifying their agitation, farmers are courting arrest for the past four days. On the first day, 50 farmers were sent to judicial custody for blocking a state highway and they were released on personal bonds. Next day, 30 farmers courted arrest for the same offence and they were released on Sunday.

On Monday, continuing their ‘jail bharo’ agitation, 25 farmers courted arrest. They were produced in the SDM Court on Wednesday.
