Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant contract workers on Monday staged a protest over their demands outside the thermal plant gate at Lehra Mohhabat.

The protest was headed by their union president Jagroop Singh. They demanded that direct recruitment in Powercom should be done by bringing them under the Contract Welfare Act 2016, salaries should be hiked as per the inflation rate and recruitment of skilled persons should be stopped and instead non-skilled persons working for a long time should be deputed on these posts.

They also demanded that vacant quarters in the power colony should be given to those who need these.

The speakers lashed out at the state government for siding with the private sector and affecting the public sector.

The protesters said the state government was giving public departments into private hands.

Jagroop Singh said the previous government had made an Act in 2016 to regularise the services of all contract as well as outsourced workers.

The present government is working against the interest of the temporary workers and also in the way to close government thermal plants just for giving benefits to private thermal plants, they added.
