Navpreet Kaur, wife of Congress leader Khushbaz Singh Jattana, who died in a road accident earlier this month, is likely to step into active politics, with several senior leaders backing the move.

The development comes days after Jattana’s demise in a mishap in Haryana’s Sonepat district on April 2.

At his last prayer meet held at Bhagi Wander village here on Sunday, politicians cutting across party lines paid tributes. Among those present were Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, and Punjabi singer Mankirt Aulakh, besides several former ministers, MLAs and MPs.

Addressing the gathering, Channi said, “Khushbaz wanted to become an MLA. I appeal to you all to make ‘bibi’ ready for it.”

Ravneet Singh Bittu said that if the family submitted a request seeking a probe by the Centre, he would pursue the matter.

Meanwhile, Jattana’s younger brother said the family had written to authorities demanding a CBI inquiry into the incident. Senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia had also raised a similar demand on Saturday.

One of Khushbaz’s close friends said, “Khushbaz’s wife will enter politics soon. She is a teacher. We have all urged her to fulfil her husband’s dream.”

Notably, Khushbaz Singh Jattana (46), had twice unsuccessfully contested Assembly elections from Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda district with a Congress ticket. He and his driver were killed when a truck hit his SUV near the Jakholi toll plaza on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway in Sonepat on the evening of April 2. His gunman sustained serious injuries.
