Bathinda, February 14
Residents of Maur town today staged a protest on the Bathinda-Mansa road after the death of a woman who was crushed under a school bus. She was waiting with three other women for someone by the roadside.
The accused driver managed to escape after the accident. The kin of the deceased held a protest on the road. They blamed the police for not arresting the accused.
Commuters suffered due to the traffic jam on the road.
Heavy police force was deployed at the protest site. The protest started around 3 pm and continued till the evening. The protesters raised slogans against the Punjab Police.
According to sources, Jogindery (40), a migrant labourer, was sitting outside the Sant Fateh Convent School with three other women at the roadside when the speeding school bus crushed her while the other women had a narrow escape. Jogindery died on the spot.
According to the kin, the driver was present on the spot for some time but police didn’t arrest him.
Maur DSP Surinder Kumar said the accused driver would be arrested only after registration of a case, but the kin didn’t give the police their statement. The DSP assured the protesters that the accused driver would be arrested soon. The protest was going on till the filing of the report. — TNS
