The Malout Panchayat Samiti election results on Saturday came as a shocker for the local Congress MLA-cum-Deputy Speaker Ajaib Singh Bhatti. Of the total 23 seats, the SAD won 13 seats, BJP one, Congress eight, while one seat was bagged by an Independent.

However, the results for Zila Parishad zones in Malout were not declared till about 10:20 pm. The counting of votes was still under way and rumour-mongers had a field day.

Notably, the SAD had last year brought its ex-MLA Harpreet Singh back to Malout constituency, who proved his mettle. The party had fielded him from Bhucho Assembly constituency in the 2017 elections, where he lost.

Meawhile, supporters of all the candidates remained busy throughout the day making phone calls to each other to know about the latest trends.

A supporter of SAD from Lambi said, “We had gone to the counting centre at Malout around 5 am and returned around 8 pm. But the results of not even a single Zila Parishad seat were declared. The election authorities failed in performing their duties diligently. Further, the slow pace of counting increased the doubts of something wrong happening inside the counting centres.”

Some SAD workers in Gidderbaha even alleged that the Congressmen were sending votes in the counting hall.

Earlier in the day, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Ramnagar exchanged heated arguments with the Gidderbaha SDM alleging that the counting was not done in a fair way. The SDM, however, refuted the allegations and asked him to approach his seniors if he had any doubt.

MK Aravind Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Muktsar, said “Everything is going on in a fair manner and no one has lodged any complaint. The counting is taking time because it is a manual process.”

Delay fuels rumours
