A migrant labourer was charred to death while asleep after a fire broke out in a room in Jammu Basti in Abohar on Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Amar Singh, was a resident of Uttar Pradesh and a labourer who had been living with his family. Area Municipal Councillor Nirmal Singh said that a woman informed him that smoke was emanating from her neighbour’s room, but the room was bolted from inside.

A fire tender reached the site which doused the fire.

Later, Singh’s burnt body was retrieved from the room. It is stated that no other member, including his two sons, was present at the time of the fire.

The deceased’s son, Karan, said that his father used to consume bidis, which could be the cause of the fire breaking out inside the room.
