Bathinda, December 14

More than 20 residents of Bhai Rupa village have been booked for attacking a police party and helping a person escape from its custody on Friday.

ASI Iqbal Singh said ASI Ranjit Singh, along with his team, was patrolling in the Phul area. At the same time, they came to know that Budh Ram of Bhai Rupa village was involved in liquor smuggling.

ASI Iqbal Singh added that acting on the tip-off, the police team raided his house and after seeing it, Budh Ram escaped by scaling the wall of the house. Thereafter, the police checked a shop situated outside the house and seized 12 bottles illicit liquor, which were of a Chandigarh brand.

The police took Budh Ram’s relative Kuldeep Kala into custody and when they about to leave for the Phul police station, his family members, along with villagers, gathered around the police vehicle. They started protesting against the policemen. The protesters allegedly abused the police personnel and involved in a scuffle with them. They got Kala released from the police custody and helped him escape from the spot.

On the statement of ASI Ranjit Singh, a case was registered against more than 20 persons, including Budh Ram, Kuldeep Kala, Bikramjit Singh, Baru Ram, Chaju Ram, Diya Kaur, Sita Devi, Binder and Shinder.
