Faridkot, November 26

Demanding justice for a woman doctor, who has accused a senior doctor in Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital (GGSMCH) of sexual harassment, members of the Punjab Students’ Union organised a protest rally here on Tuesday.

The protesters accused the district administration, the police and officials of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) of shielding the suspect because of his connections with the higher-ups. The GGSMCH is a constituent college of the BFUHS.

Despite the complainant submitting all documentary and other evidence, an inquiry against the suspect had been kept pending on one pretext or another, alleged the protesters.

They said the lackluster approach of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), the inquiry officer, regarding the case become evident from the fact that the ADC submitted inquiry report after keeping it pending for about two months. Even this report was plagued with many loopholes and lacked all basic ingredients of the law of natural justice, alleged the protestors. The ambiguities in this inquiry report were discernable that within hours of its submission, it was sent back to the ADC, they said.

After the woman doctor demanded that she should be given a chance to cross-examine all witnesses, who deposed against her, the Deputy Commissioner, asked the ADC to concede her demand. Having no faith in the Inquiry Officer (ADC), the complainant on Tuesday demanded that the examination of the witnesses and their questioning should be video-graphed. The district administration is yet to take a decision on this demand of the woman.

In her complaint, the woman had alleged that she was being harassed by the Head of Department (HoD) of Community Medicine, since 2016, when she was selected for a postgraduate course in the department. “As I declined to succumb to various pressure tactics of the HoD during my three years of academic training under his command, the latter continued to harass me even after completion of my course in June this year,” alleged the woman doctor.
