Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsEven as the political machinery was in full swing during the ‘Badlav Rally’ at Killi Chahlan in Moga, serious lapses in security arrangements came to light, leaving hundreds of deployed police personnel struggling for basic facilities after completing their duty.
A lack of coordination in transportation arrangements forced many police personnel—particularly women constables—to seek lifts in private buses arranged by the BJP to ferry party supporters to and from the rally site. With no official vehicles available to take them back, they had little option but to rely on these buses.
Male constables faced a similar predicament. Several were seen leaving the venue on their personal motorcycles and heading towards their respective postings in Moga, Jagraon, Faridkot and Ludhiana. Many had to undertake long journeys after hours of deployment without any department-provided transport.
The disparity in arrangements between senior officers and lower-rank police personnel was also evident in other aspects. While senior officials reportedly had catered meals at a private resort near the rally venue, the rank-and-file constabulary were left to manage on their own, with no organised arrangements for food or even drinking water despite long hours of duty in the field.
The situation led to visible resentment among several personnel deployed at the rally. “We are here to maintain order, but we can’t even get a ride back to the station,” said one constable on condition of anonymity.
Responding to the issue, Moga SP B K Singla said arrangements had been made for transportation to and from the rally site, adding that difficulties may have arisen due to heavy traffic snarls in the area.
