Kanchan was allegedly killed by some ‘Nihangs’, and her decomposed body was recovered from a car parked outside Adesh University at Bhucho Kalan in Bathinda district along the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway on Wednesday night.

A Nihang, Amritpal Singh Mehron, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the murder in a purported video, asserting that Kanchan was uploading “vulgar” content on social media despite having been warned in the past.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across social media.

Through a video, Mika urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to take immediate action against those responsible, stating that such acts bring shame to the Sikh community. “This is not what our community stands for. We are known for organising ‘langars’ (offering free food) for the needy. If these people really want to eliminate bad elements, then target the gangsters active in Punjab,” he said while noting that Shaheed Bhagat Singh laid down his life for the country, the accused are portraying the murder as an act of bravery.

Mika criticised those who attack women in the name of culture, adding that true warriors protect the weak, not harm them.

With nearly four lakh followers, Kanchan was a well‑known figure on Instagram. Mika demanded strict punishment for the accused and stressed that no one has the right to take the law into one's own hands

So far, five persons—Amritpal Singh Mehron; his two alleged accomplices, Nimaratjeet Singh and Jaspreet Singh (both ‘Nihangs’); Ranjit Singh; and one unidentified person—have been booked. While, as per police, Amritpal has fled to the UAE, Nimaratjeet and Jaspreet remain in custody.
