Mansa: Upset with her ex-lover, a woman constable committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance on Thursday. It is learnt that her ex-lover has also consumed poison as he was afraid that the police would book him for the death of Gagandeep Kaur, who was posted at the Budhlada police station. Gagandeep got engaged recently and her ex-lover was calling her in-laws to cancel the wedding. Her wedding was fixed for December 7. Later, her in-laws had called off the wedding. Thereafter, she consumed poison and went to duty . On the statement of deceased’s father, a case has been registered against Gurpreet of Cheema village. TNS

5-mth-old Foetus found in sewer

Bathinda: A sewer man found a five-month-old foetus wrapped in plastic polythene while cleaning the main sewer at Mata Raniwali Gali here on Thursday. After getting information, a police team from the Kotwali police station and members of an NGO, Sahara Jansewa, reached the spot. They took the foetus to the Civil Hospital for postmortem. The DNA test of the foetus will also be conducted to know the parents. The police have registered a case against an unidentified person. TNS

Bathinda: The district Health Department organised an awareness seminar to highlight the importance of the use of iodine in a daily diet at the Women and Children Hospital here. Civil Surgeon Amrik Singh presided over the event. Mass Media Officer Kulwant Singh said: “Iodine is a natural diet element and its absence can lead to miscarriage among pregnant woman. There are also possibilities of child born with deformities ranging from mental retardness, deafness and short height.” TNS
