New Delhi, January 24
A statement made by Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kailash Vijayvargiya garnered hilarious trolls and reaction by the tweeple across the country.
Vijayvargiya said that some of the labourers carrying out construction work at his house were likely to be Bangladeshis as they ate only flattened rice—'poha'.
With this, 'poha' started trending with 10.5K Tweets, where people took to the micro-blogging site and shared photos of 'poha' with funny captions.
A user with laughing emoji, wrote: "I am Punjabi and I am eating poha right now. Poha has nothing to do with Bangladesh."
Comparing the statement to NRC row, a user wrote: "According to BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya- if you eat Poha, you must be Bangladeshi. No need to show them documents for NRC now.
You can just show them your food." Sharing the picture of Poha, a user captioned: "I literally eat only poha for breakfast. Guess I'm Bangladeshi too." "I did not know that I was eating Bangladeshi food for whole of my life. Kanda-Poha is one of the favourite breakfasts of Maharashtra. Kanda Poha is a precondition of marriage," said a user.
'Non-issue'
BJP leader and Union minister Prakash Javadekar on Friday called the controversy a "non-issue".
Asked about the BJP general secretary's comments, which have drawn flak from several quarters, Javadekar told reporters here, "I also eat Poha and serve it to you (journalists). So its a non-issue".
Vijayvargiya on Thursday had said in Indore that he suspected there were some Bangladeshis among construction labourers who worked at his house recently because they consumed only "poha".
Their "strange" eating habits aroused suspicion about their nationality, the BJP general secretary said at a seminar in support of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) there.
Poha is a common dish prepared with pounded rice (Chiwra) which is quite popular in some regions, including in Vijayvargiya's home town Indore. Agencies

If eating Poha , gets you a tag of being from Bangladesh as per Ch. Kailash Vijayvargiya then almost every guy from our Maharashtra does belong from Bangladesh whose morning doesn't start without Poha and Chai .. pic.twitter.com/q2FLBepPZp

Now #Poha eaters are anti-nationals.
According to BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya- if you eat #Poha , you must be Bangladeshi!😡😡😡
He is questioning the citizenship of poor daily wage laborers just because they eat #poha.
Seriously? 😠 pic.twitter.com/e52hF832n9
