Dedicated to the 550th Parkash Purb of Guru Nanak Dev , a pictorial book titled, “Guru Nanak Darshan”, on the life and philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev was released at Khalsa College here on Tuesday. The book contains paintings by renowned artists and historical accounts relating to the Guru’s life and teachings.

Golden Temple head granthi Giani Jagtar Singh, who presided over the book release ceremony, said this was an opportune time to propagate the philosophy of Guru Nanak who stood for justice, equality and fraternity. “Such works and occasions become a source of inspiration to connect the people with the life and philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev,” he said.

Khalsa College principal Mehal Singh said suggestions of esteemed scholars had been solicited and eminent artists revered by the Sikh community were engaged to create portraits and paintings for the book. “The book contains 63 pictures. Each portrait is a representation of Guru Sahib’s life, work and philosophy. Historical details and great works of Guru Nanak have been illustrated chronologically in these pictures. Each picture seems to be one with various stages of Guru Sahib’s life,” he said.

RMS Chinna, secretary, KCGC, said utmost care had to be taken to prepare such a book as to reflect our deep devotion and respect for Guru Nanak. “The philosophy emanating from the images has been described by the words from the Guru’s hymns also, thus the pictures and information regarding Guru Sahib has been creatively presented and the critics can enhance their understanding through these pictures. So that most people can read the book, details have been made available both in Punjabi and English,” said Chhina.

The book’s design and cover art concept is by Dr Mehal Singh, Dr Inderjit Singh Gagoani and Dr AS Chamak while the English translation is done by Dr GS Walia, DS Rataul and Puneet Kaur. The book is published by the Khalsa College Charitable Society (KCCS) and was conceived by the management last year. “It took a lot of precision, dedication and devotion to bring out such an account on Guru Sahib’s life”, said KCCS president Satyajit Singh Majithia. “The society manages 20 educational institutions and has been dedicated to celebrate the birth anniversaries of all Gurus with devotion. 2019 was dedicated to the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, which witnessed seminars, talks, lectures and workshops and mega kirtan darbars being held on the college campus to engage not just students but also the faculty in understanding the message of Guru Nanak,” said Chhina.
