Chandigarh, August 13

Rate rationalisation, reducing tax slabs and removing duty inversion under GST are likely to top the agenda the GST Council holds its 54th meeting on September 9 in New Delhi.

Insiders say the meeting that will be chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman may give further momentum to reforms, addressing not only tax rate revisions but also easy compliance.

In the 53rd GST Council meeting held on June 22, the council recommended to prescribe a uniform rate of 12 per cent on all milk cans meaning steel, iron, and aluminium which are irrespective of the use. Services provided by Indian Railways like platform tickets were also exempted from GST. Carton boxes and solar cookers to be taxed at 12 per cent GST. — TNS
