India’s wholesale inflation rises to 9.87% in June on higher food, metal prices

The ministry claims that rising costs for food items, basic metals, chemicals and chemical products and mineral oils (including petroleum products) were the main reasons of the rise in wholesale inflation

India’s wholesale price inflation (WPI) increased to 9.87 per cent in June from 9.68 per cent in May, primarily as a result of higher costs for food items, basic metals, chemicals and mineral oils, as per the data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the All India Wholesale Price Index (Base Year 2022-23) for all commodities increased from 109.9 in May to 110.2 in June.

The ministry claims that rising costs for food items, basic metals, chemicals and chemical products and mineral oils (including petroleum products) were the main reasons of the rise in wholesale inflation.

Fuel and Power inflation decreased to 27.41 per cent from 30.33 per cent, while Primary Articles registered an annual inflation of 7 per cent, up from 4.99 per cent in May. The rate of inflation in manufactured goods remained unchanged at 7.48 per cent.

The Ministry stated that the WPI Food Index increased from 4.49 per cent in May to 6.14 per cent in June, suggesting that wholesale food price inflation accelerated throughout the month.

The final WPI for April 2026 has been revised upward but the preliminary estimates were established with a weighted response rate of 82.6 per cent. The inflation rate has been revised from the provisional estimate of 8.26 per cent to 8.36 per cent due to the revision of the April Wholesale Price Index from 108.8 to 108.9.

Additionally, the ministry published preliminary estimates for the trial Input Producer Price Index (IPPI) and the Output Producer Price Index (Output PPI). In June, the trial input PPI for the manufacturing sector increased to 107.1, while the All India Output PPI for all commodities was 109.9.
