Chandigarh: Sector 30 youth tests positive

A 22-year-old youth from Sector 30-B and a 40-year-old woman from Mohali tested positive for Covid-19 today, taking the total number of cases in the tricity to 14.

Panic grips residents

Panic gripped city residents when the UT Adviser tweeted: “Bad news, one new corona positive case in Chandigarh. Dubai returned. Symptoms detection on 15th day. Unusual. Tracing his contacts. All will be quarantined.”
The residents were surprised to learn that the eighth patient had developed symptoms after 14 days. Parida later introduced correction in the second tweet: “Correction he developed symptoms after 10 days, but reported to hospital only after 15 days.”

The youth, who is the eighth positive case from the city and currently under treatment at the GMCH, Sector 32, had returned from Dubai on March 11. He had developed symptoms like fever after 10 days and reported to the GMCH on March 25.

He was residing with his mother and met his friend at Sector 29-B recently. His mother and his friend and family have been home-quarantined.

This implies that the patient did not quarantine himself after returning from abroad. His name also does not figure on the contact tracing list of the UT, according to which 823 persons have been quarantined.

According to UT Adviser Manoj Parida, the eighth patient’s name was not on the list of those returned from abroad, which was why he could not be officially home-quarantined by the Administration.

Sources said he was working at a motor market and met workers there too. He had also visited a local doctor in Sector 30.

He was putting up at EWS Colony in Sector 30 where approximately 300 houses are closely jam-packed. The patient had reportedly visited a gurdwara at Sector 30-B.

The police have barricaded the entire lane and restricted the entry of people.

The UT's Health Department said the contact-tracing exercise for the primary contacts of the first seven positive cases had been completed and those had been quarantined as per the protocol.

Dr Gajinder Dewan, Director, Health Services, UT, said, "We have taken steps to identify those under quarantine for the safety of the residents."

57 contacts traced, put under home-quarantine

Fifty-seven contacts, both primary and secondary, of the eighth positive patient have been traced and put under home-quarantine. The secondary contacts are family members of primary contacts. Of these, seven are close contacts and one is a direct high-risk contact i.e. his mother. His father lives in Dubai and brother in Canada. The patient was totally asymptomatic and fully stable, said the officials of the Health Department.
