1.5-kg hair mass removed from kid’s stomach

Panchkula, July 1

Doctors at the Civil Hospital, Sector 6, here today removed a ball of hair weighing 1.5 kg from the stomach of a five-year-old girl.

Dr Vivek Bhadoo, who led a five-member team that conducted the hour-long surgery, said the girl was stable.

“After getting the girl’s medical examination conducted, it came to light that she was suffering from a rare disease called trichobezoar,” he said.

“Under this medical condition, patients tear their own hair and eat them. After a certain period, the hair forms a hard lump inside the stomach. It leads to symptoms like loss of appetite and weight and abdominal distension,” Dr Bhadoo informed.

“If not treated on time, it could lead to malnourishment and other complications,” he said.

Dr Bhadoo revealed that the girl couldn’t eat properly for the past 3-4 months.

The girl from Mauli Jagran was taken to hospital after she complained of abdominal pain for many days. — TNS
