2,109 vote in PU Academic Council poll

Despite resentment over the election process of the PU Academic Council, voting for the election of 15 college teachers to the council took place today. A total of 2,109 persons voted at 91 polling booths at the respective colleges.

In connection to the election of 15 teachers to the Academic Council for the term February 1, 2020 to January 31, 2022 held today, Senators Dalip Kumar and Jarnail Singh wrote to the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of PU.

The senators called for inclusion of various colleges, including PGGCG-11, Chandigarh; Government College, Hoshiarpur; SCD Government College, Ludhiana; Ramgarhia Girls College, Ludhiana; Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Ludhiana; Khalsa College, Garhdiwala; and GGDSD College, Hoshiarpur. “It is to be mentioned that principals/ faculty of these mentioned colleges are also member of the Senate. About 1,500 teachers were deprived of their democratic right in the election,” they said.

Moreover, faculty members of these colleges could not able to contest the said election. “In a letter issued by the university dated 13.11.2019, it was mentioned that the final list of voters will be prepared for publication on the basis of Annual Qualification Return (AQR),” the senators said.

PU Registrar Karamjeet Singh clarified that a preliminary list of voters was put up on the notice board 60 days before the elections. As per the election schedule, objections to the voter list, to the Returning Officer (RO), was called on November 30, 53 days before the elections and the decision of the RO to the objections was invited 50 days before the elections.

Similarly, the publication of final list of voters was displayed 45 days before the elections and nomination forms were invited 25 days before the polling day.
