2 arrested for duping families of Rs 14 lakh in work visa fraud
The accused neither secured work visas nor return the money to the complainants
The Anti-Immigration Fraud Unit has arrested two suspects from Punjab for defrauding six families of Rs 14 lakh by promising Italian work visas to their youths. Sagar Singh, a resident of Amritsar, and Gurpreet Singh of Gurdaspur, were arrested from different villages in Amritsar on January 12.
The police received a complaint alleging that six youths from different families in Panchkula were duped on the pretext of sending them to Italy in 2023. The complainants stated that they met the accused through an acquaintance and agreed to pay Rs 14 lakh for arranging Italian work visas. After receiving the money, the accused neither secured work visas nor return the money to the complainants.
A case was registered at the Chandimandir police station under Sections 406, 420, 120-B of the Indian Penal Code and Section 24 of the Immigration Act.
The investigation was handed over to the Anti-Immigration Fraud Unit.
Both accused were produced in a court today and were sent in three-day police remand.
Fourth arrest in Rs 15-lakh immigration fraud
The Anti-Immigration Fraud Unit has arrested another member of a gang involved in a Rs 15 lakh fraud related to a New Zealand work visa on January 10, marking it the fourth arrest in the case.
The arrested accused has been identified as Ambala native Rajeev Kumar, who used to live in a government accommodation in Sector 19, Chandigarh.
He was employed as a Group-D employee in a UT department and was actively associated with the fraud network, receiving commissions for arranging overseas placements. He was sent in three-day police remand on January 11.
In his complaint, a Panchkula resident alleged that the accused took Rs 15 lakh from him on the false promise of sending his son to New Zealand on a work visa in June 2024.
When the complainant demanded his money back, the accused started evading him. A case was registered on May 27, 2025, under Sections 420, 406, 120-B, 201 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 24 of the Immigration Act. Main accused Shailendra Kumar, alias Shail, a resident of Kanpur, was arrested on December 9. One more accused has been identified and will be arrested soon, cops said.
