The crime branch of the UT police claims to have solved seven cases of mobile snatching and three cases of vehicle theft with the arrest of two snatchers and their accomplice, who used to purchase the snatched mobile phones from them.
DSP (Crime) Pawan Kumar said the snatchers had been identified as Vicky (23), a native of Ludhiana who was at present staying at his aunt’s house in Sector 38 (West), and Happyjit Singh (22), also a native of Ludhiana who worked as a sweeper at a hotel in Burail.
The third accused had been identified as Ramesh Kumar (29), who had been residing in Ludhiana for the past five years. He used to purchase the snatched mobile phones.
A team, led by Inspector Amanjot Singh, in-charge of the crime branch, nabbed Vicky from an area falling under the jurisdiction of the Sector 34 police station on September 22. His arrest further led the police to the other two miscreants.
The police have recovered seven mobile phones, including a recently launched version of iPhone and three stolen motorcycles from their possession.
The city had witnessed a spurt in snatching incidents in the past three weeks following which the police were on the lookout for the snatchers. “The snatchers were frequently targeting pedestrians,” said a police official.
