Chandigarh: An accused in a case of robbery registered against him in 2017 tried to escape from custody after he had surrendered before the court on November 17.



Chandigarh: An accused in a case of robbery registered against him in 2017 tried to escape from custody after he had surrendered before the court on November 17. The accused was chased by police officials, who managed to nab him. According to the police, complainant Mewa Singh, reader to JMIC Jaspreet Singh, reported that the accused, Gaurav, alias Gora, a resident of Ram Darbar, Phase I, surrendered before the court in a case registered against him at the Sector 31 police station on January 12, 2017. The police said as per the court orders, the accused was taken in custody by the naib court. Thereafter, the accused managed to escape from the courtroom. The naib court and policemen present in the court chased the accused and managed to apprehend him. A police official said another case under Section 223 (escape from confinement or custody negligently suffered by a public servant) of the IPC had been registered against the accused at the Sector 36 police station. 3 booked for stalking girl

Dera Bassi: The local police have booked three youths for allegedly teasing and stalking a girl at Dera Bassi. According to the police, the victim, a resident of Dera Bassi, reported that the youths, who were triple-riding on a motorcycle, followed her on the road from the local bus stand towards the college road when she was returning home on November 13. The victim said the youths again followed her on November 15 and teased her. The police were informed about the incident following which a case was registered against the three at the Dera Bassi police station. OC

Overloading: 46 vehicles seized

Dera Bassi: Law enforcing agencies have begun a drive against overloading of heavy vehicles in the Dera Bassi subdivision. A team of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Mohali, has impounded 46 vehicles for overloading and recovered a fine of Rs 3.91 lakh from owners. Sukhwinder Kumar, RTA, Mohali, said during the checking of vehicles in the past week, challans were issued to owners of 22 tippers and 24 tractor-trailers for the commercial use of vehicles besides overloading. Mohali Deputy Commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra has asked the RTA and the traffic wing to launch a comprehensive drive to reign in the violators. OC

217 examined at medical camp

Dera Bassi: As many as 217 patients were examined during a free mega medical camp, organised by JK Shanti Charitable Society, at JK Charitable Clinic in Mubarakpur. It was organised under the guidance of Dr Ram Kumar and Dr SK Mittal, retired SMOs. Most medicines were provided free of cost. Lab tests were also conducted. Ved Goyal, executive member of The Kailash Goyal Foundation, USA, a long with Surinder Jain, local municipal councillor, were present during the camp. OC  

Cyclothon in run-up to lit fest

Chandigarh: In a run-up to the Military Literature Festival in December, a cyclothon and a women’s nature trail were organised at Sukhna Lake on Sunday. The cyclothon, open to all persons above 14 years of age, commenced and culminated at the Lake Club, covering a distance of about 20 kilometres. Check points were established after famous battles fought by the Indian armed forces.  Besides local residents, sports persons, students and ex-servicemen took part in the event. The participants had special shirts with numbers.The nature trail was conducted in the forest area behind the lake for women. A veterans’ golf tournament is scheduled for Monday. TNS   

238th anniversary of Sappers

Chandigarh: The Army’s Corps of Engineers, also called the Sappers, commemorated its 238th Corps Day at the Chandimandir military station on Sunday. On the occasion, the Chief Engineer, Western Command, Maj Gen S Radhakrishnan, along with serving and retired officers, laid a wreath at the Veer Smriti War Memorial to pay homage to martyrs. One of the oldest arms of the Army, the Corps of Engineers has played a significant role in providing combat engineer support during war as well as development of infrastructure for the armed forces and other defence organisations. The Sappers, true to their motto “Sarvatra”, have proved their mettle by providing selfless service in all spheres of nation building.  TNS

‘Committed to job creation’ 

Kharar: The Punjab Government is fully committed to make the youth self-reliant due to which job fairs are being organised till November 22 at various locations in the state This was stated by Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi during a job fair at Chandigarh University, Gharuan. In the job fair, 1,475 students appeared for interviews. As many as 407 students were selected by various companies. Chanii said the state government was all set to launch district bureaus for employment. “Moreover, the government has decided to introduce a policy for the youth who are interested to go abroad,” he said. He further said the Department of Technical Education, Punjab, was all set to introduce bio-metric attendance from the current session at all polytechnic and engineering colleges across the state. Cash, cheque book stolen

Dera Bassi: Thieves struck at a bookstore here on Saturday night and decamped with cash and a cheque book. The  cheque book was recovered by the police from a Santro car found abandoned in Chandigarh. The incident came to light on Sunday when some passersby found locks of the shop broken and immediately informed its owner. Investigating officer Harjit Singh told the police that the shop owner, Vijay Kumar, told them that cash and a cheque book were stolen.  Prem Singh, an ASI posted at the Sector 31 police station in Chandigarh, said they had received a call on Sunday morning about an abandoned Santro car. When a police team reached there, they recovered a cheque book. State masters athletics meet 

to be held on December 2

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Masters Athletics Association will organise the 39th Masters Athletic Meet at the Sector 7 Sports Complex on December 2. The championship will be organised in the above 35 years age group. Participants should bring their photo identity card, age proof, residence proof of the city on the day of the championship. Only local residents will be eligible to participate in the tournament. The organisers will also select the teams for the 2nd National Masters Championship to be held in Dehradun from February 14.

Taekwondo squad announced 

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Taekwondo Association selected the city’s team for the Junior National Taekwondo Championship to be held in Shimoga, Karnataka, from December 5 to 8. Ashok’s ton in Health Techies win 

Chandigarh: Health Techies defeated Tynor Orthotics by 114 runs in the 8th AG Pharma Cup T-20 Cricket Tournament. Batting first, Health Techies scored 199 in their allotted 20 overs with the help of an unbeaten 101 by Ashok Malik. He was ably supported by Abhay (82). Mahipal claimed two wickets, while Raj Kumar took one. In reply, Tynor Orthotics were bundled out for 85 runs in 11.2 overs. Gurdip (16) and Kulvir (13) were the main run-getters. Sonu claimed 4/16, while Ashok took two wickets. In the second match, Macleods Pharma went down against Venice Pharma by three wickets. TNS
