Advocate dies hours after heated argument with fellow lawyers

A 41-year-old advocate died a few hours after an alleged argument with lawyers at the District Court Complex in Sector 43 on Monday. It is alleged that the victim Neeraj Hans was allegedly punched in the chest that led to his death. A police complaint has been filed in this regard and the matter was being investigated by the Chandigarh Police.

A woman lawyer complained that she along with her colleague had gone to pick her scooter from the court parking area when another lawyer came there and started a conversation. The complainant alleged that at the same time one more lawyer with whom they were not on talking terms arrived there. She further alleged that both lawyers had some conversation after which they started misbehaving with her and her colleague.

Around the same time, Neeraj arrived there and tried to intervene, following which he was allegedly punched in the chest, according to the complaint submitted at the Sector 43 police post.

It is alleged that Neeraj, a former secretary of the District Court Bar Council, complained of chest pain and was rushed to a private hospital in Sector 34, from where he was referred to the PGI, where he later died. The autopsy was conducted today. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, the lawyers who have been accused of the assault have also submitted their complaint. “Both complaints are being investigated,” said a police official.

The police said that three FIRs have been filed in connection with the incident. One case was registered based on the complaint of the female lawyer, another on the complaint of the victim’s brother and the third was filed following a complaint by the lawyer accused of the assault. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against the three lawyers at the Sector 36 police station.

Three booked for culpable homicide

One case was registered based on the complaint of the female lawyer, another on the complaint of the victim’s brother and the third was filed following a complaint by the lawyer accused of the assault. Besides, a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against the three lawyers at the Sector 36 police station.
