A motor mechanic, who allegedly killed his mother and injured his wife and three children at Tepla village in Shambu block here on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, has reportedly committed suicide.

The 32-year-old suspect, Harjinder Singh, who fled from the house after the incident, was found dead on a railway track on Saturday night.

The police said the suspect reportedly committed by jumping before a train. His body was found on the Ambala-Rajpura track near Daria village, a few kilometres away from his native village. The police also found his motorcycle near the railway track.

Manpreet Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Ghanaur, said the body of the deceased had been handed over to his family members after conducting the post-mortem examination.

He said: “We got information about the incident from the railway police. He alleged committed suicide by jumping before a train.”

The DSP said preliminary investigations revealed that he killed his mother and injured his wife and three children over family squabbles. Kamaljit Singh, brother-in-law of the suspect, said he used to thrash his sister quite often.

Manpreet said his wife and three children were undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32, Chandigarh. The condition of the victims is stated to be critical.

The case

The suspect, Harjinder Singh, reportedly killed his mother and attacked his wife and three children over family squabbles on the intervening night of the Friday and Saturday. The incident came to light around 7 am after his neighbours got suspicious when they did not notice any movement in the house. On checking the house, Harjinder’s mother Naib Kaur (60) was found dead, while his wife and three children were seriously injured. The police said the suspect had attacked his family members with a sharp weapon.
