Leading the penultimate day by two shots, Chandigarh’s Angad Cheema (68-63-65-69) claimed the runner-up spot at the Telangana Golconda Masters being played at the Hyderabad Golf Association (HGA).

Kolkata-based professional Shankar Das’ astounding birdie-spree on the front-nine turned the tournament on its head in the final round, earning Shankar a spectacular three-shot win. Das, lying overnight tied third and two off the lead, pulled a rabbit out of the hat with a fiery last round of 64 that helped him outplay the rest of the field and bag his eighth professional title.

Shankar (70-64-64-64), the 2014 PGTI Order of Merit champion, who went 53 holes without a bogey during the week, totalled 18-under 262 for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Cheema won the second position with a score of 15-under 265, following his fourth round of 69. It was his sixth top-10 and second runner-up finish of the season and as a result he consolidated himself in fourth place on the Tata Steel PGTI Ranking.

Gurugram golfer Veer Ahlawat’s (68) ended with third place finish at 14-under 266.

Sandeep wins IGU Senior Amateur Championship

In the recently concluded Indian Golf Union All-India Senior Amateur Golf Championship, Chandigarh’s Sandeep Bobby Sandhu won the overall championship.

Playing at Noida Golf Course, Sandhu played steady rounds of 77, 76 & 76. This is the most prestigious national senior amateur golf championship and previous winners include Asian Games gold medallist Laxman Singh, Rishi Narain and Amit Luthra.

Sandhu was joint leader after Day 1 with a score of 77 and on Day 2, he shot a round of 76 to consolidate his position to take a three-shot lead.
