The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has launched a focused, citizen-centric “Area Stewardship” initiative aimed at improving the quality, continuity and accountability of civic services. Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh said, “Under the initiative, specific phases, sectors, villages and road stretches within municipal limits have been assigned to designated officers and officials to enable closer monitoring and quicker resolution of civic issues.”

“Officers will act as an “area custodians” and directly oversee key services, including sanitation, mechanical sweeping, solid waste management, park maintenance, bush cutting, street lighting, water supply, sewerage and road repairs in their jurisdiction. Regular and surprise inspections will be conducted, and even minor deficiencies will be reported in writing for time-bound rectification,” Singh added.

The MC has made a list of area incharges and their official contact numbers, which includes officers such as Assistant Commissioners Varinder Kumar Jain (Sector-76), Manpreet Singh (Sector-117, 74A TDI & Village Baliyali), and Jagjit Singh Judge (Sector-64 & 48C), besides various XENs, SDOs, engineers, inspectors and building inspectors made individually responsible for clearly demarcated areas. A detailed list will be released so residents can directly contact the accountable officer for their locality.

A dedicated “Municipal Services Reporting and ATR” WhatsApp group will be formed to share field observations in real-time and monitor action taken reports (ATR) on priority to ensure swift response and coordination. Issues related to sanitation, solid waste management (SWM), park cleanliness, bush cutting and street lighting are to be resolved within 24 hours, while water supply, sewerage and road maintenance concerns will be addressed on priority. Weekly review meetings will be held by the Medical Officer (Health) for sanitation and SWM, and by the Chief Engineer for engineering works to review compliance and initiate corrective measures. All nominated officers will maintain a daily inspection register to ensure proper documentation and accountability.

These measures supplement the ongoing random and surprise inspections being conducted as per the directions of the Local Government Department, Punjab. The area-wise stewardship model is expected to strengthen field supervision, enable early detection of lapses and ensure structured, time-bound and transparent service delivery in the larger public interest.
