Asian Relay Championships: Delegation inspects Sec 7 sports complex facilities in Chandigarh
Detailed assessment of the city’s sports infrastructure conducted
Chandigarh has significantly strengthened its bid to host the Asian Relay Championships scheduled for June 2027, following an inspection visit by senior officials of the Asian Athletics Association to the Sector 7 sports complex today.
The association’s secretary general Shugurman and technical director CK Valson conducted a detailed assessment of the city’s sports infrastructure. The delegation inspected the synthetic athletic track at the sports complex, along with other facilities essential for hosting an international event.
During their visit, the officials held discussions with representatives of the Chandigarh Athletics Association and senior officials of the Chandigarh Administration regarding technical requirements and logistical arrangements. The local authorities claimed to have assured all necessary upgrades, including installation of floodlights, warm-up track planning, VIP lounge facilities and additional toilet blocks will be completed well in time to meet international standards. The visiting officials described Chandigarh as a promising and capable host city.
It was also noted that Saudi Arabia is among the other contenders for hosting rights. The final decision will be taken at the Asian Athletics Association council meeting scheduled to be held in Hong Kong in May, where representatives from Chandigarh will formally present their bid.
The championship is expected to feature around 250 athletes from 25 countries, along with international technical officials. The event will also serve as a qualifying platform for the World Athletics Championships, adding prestige and competitive significance.
“If the hosting rights are given to us, then this will mark Chandigarh’s return to the international sporting calendar after 24 years. The last major international event hosted by the city was the rowing championship in 2001,” said one of the representatives of the local associations.
