Bhagminder shines, claims 6 wkts

Chandigarh pacer Bhagminder Singh returned with a spell of 6/73 to restrict hosts Patiala to 215 runs on the first day of the two-day fourth leg match of the Punjab Inter-District Cricket Championship for the Katoch Shield at Dhruv Pandove Stadium in Patiala today.

Winning the toss and opting to bat, Patiala were bowled out in 55.3 overs. Openers Prabhsimran Singh and Jiwanjot Singh raised an 82-run partnership before Bhagminder swung into action. He accounted for Jiwanjot for 17 off 42 runs. Prabhsimran followed suit to become the second victim of Bhagminder, the team's total reading 119 runs. He had posted 92 runs off 92 balls, including 13 boundaries and two sixes.

Arpit Singh then took charge and provided a big fillip to Chandigarh when he picked up four wickets. He claimed Prabhjot Singh (8), Mandeep Inder Bawa (7), Brahm Dayal (0) and Karan Kaila (9) to reduce Patiala to 158/6. 

Bhagminder then returned to claim Sanvir Singh (24), Pukhraj Mann (29), Ikjot Thind (0) and Tejpreet Singh (14) to complete his six-wicket haul. Arpit claimed 4/52 to remain the second-best performer for the bowling side.

In reply, the city lads also had a shaky start and were in trouble at 122/5 when the stumps were drawn. The team the first three wickets with only 50 runs on the board. Manan Vohra (20), Arjit Singh (8) and Bhagminder (2) fell prey to Karan Kaila. Shivam Bhambri was then joined by Gourav Puri and the duo raised a 46-run stand for the fourth wicket. Dayal accounted for Puri (13) to give another jolt to the visitors. 

Raman Bishnoi (5) was the fifth man out after being run-out off Sanvir's throw. Bhambri was unbeaten at 56 off 114 balls, with six boundaries and two sixes, and Arpit on 6. Kaila claimed 3/40 while Dayal took 1/40 for the bowling side.

Mohali amass 427 runs

Mohali were in the driver's seat after posting an impressive 427/8 in their allotted 95 overs against hosts Amritsar at Gandhi Grounds. Opener Sachin Sohal (31) departed early with the team total reading 74. 

Thereafter, Abhijeet Garg and Taranpreet Singh raised a 104-run partnership for the second wicket. The partnership was broken when Taranpreet (56 off 100 balls, with 10 boundaries) was caught short of the crease while taking a second run. However, this did not prevent Mohali from achieving a big total. 

Garg, who was playing well, fell three short of his century. He posted 97 off 151 balls, with 11 boundaries and one six before falling to Vinay Choudhary. Ramandeep Singh (59 off 78 balls, with six boundaries and a six), Mayank Sidhu (67 off 71 balls, with two boundaries and a six), Gurkeerat Singh Mann (30 off 22 balls, with three boundaries and two sixes), Jassinder Singh (22 off 52 balls) and Maninder Singh (22 off 14 balls) were the main contributors as Mohali reached 427. 

Choudhary (2/113), Abhinav Sharma (2/60), Ashwani Kumar (2/63) and Rohit Gulati (1/104) were the main wicket-takers for the bowling side.

Gurjot's double ton for Ludhiana

Gurjot Singh scored an unbeaten 201 off 288 balls, with 18 boundaries and nine sixes, to help Ludhiana declare their innings at 367/4 in 87 overs against Ropar. Gurjot was involved in a few important partnerships — a 113-run opening wicket stand with Sunny Pandey (46 off 103 balls, with seven boundaries and a six), a 73-run second wicket stand with Kasish (47 off 56 balls, with four boundaries and a six) and a 140-run third wicket partnership with Deepin Chitkara (50 off 56 balls, with four boundaries and a six). 

Simranpal (2/47), Parees Bhatia (1/122) and Manender (1/103) were the main wicket-takers for Ropar. In reply, Ropar were 15/1 at the close of play.

Jalandhar post 110 runs

Hosts Jalandhar posted 110 runs without losing a wicket against Nawanshahr in a rain-hit match. Only 21 overs were bowled on the first day as heavy rain delayed the start of the match. Jalandhar openers Mansab Gill (69 off 71 balls, with nine boundaries and one six) and Gaurav Chaudhary (28 off 40 balls) will continue their innings tomorrow.
