Panchkula, September 20
After the rejection of bail by the High Court, BJP Yuva Morcha leader Amit Gupta, who was accused of sending objectionable videos to a WhatsApp group, surrendered before the police here on Thursday.
After getting him medically examined at the Civil Hospital in Sector 6 here, the police produced the leader in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Rohit Watts, which remanded him in judicial custody.
Amit’s counsel Rakesh Rana said they had applied for bail in the CJM court, which would come up for hearing on September 23.
It is pertinent to mention here that Amit had been on the run after the police had registered a case on the complaint of District Congress senior vice-president Ranjeeta Mehta at the women police station. He had applied for the bail in the lower court. After his bail was rejected there, he applied for the same in the High Court, which also rejected his plea.
Amit was expelled from the post of the vice-president of the BJP Yuva Morcha.
The Congress leader had alleged that the police were not arresting Amit as he was a nephew of local MLA Gian Chand Gupta. However, Gian Chand Gupta, while refuting the allegations, had stated that his name was unnecessarily being dragged in this case as Amit was not his relative and was one of the workers. He had said there were several workers who were closely associated with him as they were working as personal assistants. Opposition parties were unnecessarily dragging his name in this issue to take a political mileage, he stated.
