Clogged sewer lines, broken railings, dilapidated condition of toilets and lack of sanitation are some of the problems that the traders of the Sector 47 market face on a daily basis. The sector has two markets, one in Sector 47-C, while the other in Sector 47-D.

Ranjit Singh, president of the Market Welfare Association, Sector 47-D, said blockage of sewer pipes was the major problem in the market. The sewer lines remain blocked all the time, causing inconvenience to the traders. He said the association members had taken up the issue with the authorities concerned many a times, but to no avail.

The situation is so bad that one has to cover one’s nose while visiting the market. Anil Kumar, general secretary of the Market Welfare Association, Sector 47-D, said the sanitation condition of the market was also not satisfactory.

Ranjit Singh, a trader, said railings were been broken at several places. Another problem was the appalling condition of toilets due to which the traders and the visitors had to face inconvenience, he said.

Also, toilets did not have electricity meters as the contractor had not been paying the bill for the past two years. Tiles were broken by the MC for reason best known to them, but not repaired after that, he added.

The Sector 47-C market is also facing the same problems. Jagjit Singh, president of the Market Welfare Association, Sector 47-C, said the street lights were not functioning properly. The main sewer lines were old and blocked most of the time. He said an abandoned plot between two SCOs had turned into a dumping yard.

Gurmeet Singh, general secretary of the association, said the MC had identified sites for vendors on the rear side of the market. Before that the traders were using the place for parking. The market lacks basic facilities. The authorities concerned should look into the matter at the earliest.
