Zirakpur: Boy mauled by stray dog, '40 cases in month’ at Baltana

A 14-year-old boy was traumatised after being bitten multiple times by a stray dog in Govind Vihar colony in Baltana yesterday.
Victim Ojas, a Class IX student, was bitten on his leg as he fell down while trying to save himself. The victim was attacked relentlessly by the canine as he cried for help. It was after a while that passersby rushed for help. The boy was taken to a private hospital by his family members where he was under treatment.
Residents said the stray dog menace had peaked in the area with more than a dozen stray dogs roaming around.
The area residents said around 40 cases of dog bite had been reported in the area in a little more than one month.
Despite informing area councillor and MC officials, no action has been taken so far, they alleged. The Animal Birth Control programme of Zirakpur Municipal Council is in a shambles as the dog pound remains inoperative for better part of the year. An outsourced firm has been hired to sterilise dogs, but it does not operate more than 15 dogs a day, that too occasionally.
Zirakpur MC officials said efforts were being made to operate the dog pound in an efficient way.
