Chandigarh: A Burail resident has been arrested by the crime branch of the UT police with heroin.



Chandigarh: A Burail resident has been arrested by the crime branch of the UT police with heroin. According to the police, Yograj, alias Yogi, was arrested from near Sector 45 while possessing 4.5 gm of heroin.  A case has been registered. TNS

Remand for 3 in Gillco murder 

Kharar: A local court has sent the three persons, who were arrested by the Kharar City police in the Gillco Valley murder case, to police remand till March 20. The body of Savita Devi was found near Gillco Valley here on March 14. During investigation, the police arrested three persons, including her husband Pintu and his two brothers Amit and Ram Kumar. The police said the fourth suspect in the case, Deepak, would be arrested soon. They said the police have recovered the hammer used in the crime. The auto in which the four had reached the crime scene and the two-wheeler on which they revisited the spot have also been seized. OC

Workshop on sustainable manufacturing

Ropar: More than 100 students from 28 educational institutes took part in a workshop on sustainable manufacturing at the IIT-Ropar here. The workshop focused on collective knowledge and understanding regarding sustainable manufacturing. OC

Kharar: Indo Global Colleges celebrated its 16th annual day titled 'Mosaic-2019' under the theme of 'Birthday'. The event began with the lamp-lighting ceremony. Students presented skits, group dance, songs and drama. Bhangra and fashion show were the highlight.

Kharar: Students of CGC, Landran, invited over 100 disabled, orphan, needy children to their campus and greeted them with goodies on International Happiness Day. Children from Apne Foundation, Joyti Saroop Institute, Astha School and Ashiana Children's Home attended the event. OC

Fire breaks out at Ambala house

Ambala: A major tragedy was averted after a fire broke out at a house in Sector 9, Ambala City, on Tuesday. However, no loss of life was reported in the incident. According to information, neighbours noticed smoke around 7 am and informed the fire department about the same. While children were sleeping in the house, their parents had gone for a morning walk. The children were brought out of the house safely. Two fire engines were pressed into service to douse the flames. Short-circuit is suspected to be the reason behind the incident. TNS

Woman hurt in road accident

Dera Bassi: An eight-month pregnant woman sustained injuries after she was allegedly hit by a motorcycle while crossing the road near Bhankarpur village here on Tuesday. The incident took place when the victim, Navdeep Kaur, was crossing the stretch near the village. In the meantime, a motorcycle coming from the Chandigarh side reportedly hit her following which she sustained injuries. She was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, from where she was referred to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh. OC

Railway Childline member sacked

Ambala: A member of the Railway childline, whose video of being manhandled by some people went viral on Monday, was sacked by the Haryana State Council for Child Welfare on Tuesday. According to information, around 2 am on Sunday, the childline member was allegedly seeking money from someone forcibly following which he was manhandled outside the Ambala Cantt railway station. Sources in the Railway childline said following the complaint sent by the District Council for Child Welfare, the member has been sacked with immediate effect. The member, identified as Sonu, belonged to Tohana and had been associated with the childline since September. TNS

Man held with liquor boxes

Kharar: The police have arrested Khuspreet Singh of Cholta Khurd and recovered 10 boxes of liquor from him. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against the suspect. The police got a tip-off that the suspect used to bring liquor from Chandigarh and sell it in villages around Gharuan. OC

Chandigarh: An unbeaten half-century by Manoj helped Blackhawks XI beat Punjab & Haryana High Court Advocates XI by three wickets in a Bharat Kesho Gupta Memorial Cricket League match here on Tuesday. Batting first, Advocates XI scored 169/5 in 20 overs. Tejwinder Gill hit a strokeful 51, while Aman Singh added 40 runs to the total. Puneet Bali chipped in with a 37. In reply, Blackhawks XI rode on Manoj’s 49-ball 76 to reach home in 19.1 overs with three wickets to spare. Aanchal contributed 27 runs to the chase. In another match, Ataxic XI defeated 9D Sports Academy by seven wickets. Opting to bat, 9D Academy made 148/7 in 20 overs after Sukhpal hit a brisk 53. Jatinder managed 35 runs for the team. Dev Juna claimed three wickets for Ataxic, while Anish Malhotra accounted for two wickets. In reply, Ataxic XI scampered home in 14.1 overs with seven wickets in hand. Ramanjeet made 51 runs, while Tej Gobind scored a quick-fire 36. Lovepreet contributed 34 runs to the chase. In the last league match of the day, Gladiators CC defeated Gladiators Zirakpur by 34 runs. TNS

Soft tennis trials today

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Amateur Soft Tennis Association will on Wednesday conduct trials to select men’s and women’s teams for the 16th Senior National Soft Tennis Championship, scheduled to be held at KD Singh Babu Stadium in Lucknow from March 27-31. The trials will be held at the Chandigarh Club, the sports body said here on Tuesday. TNS
