Chandigarh, August 14

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Chandigarh bench, on Tuesday ordered a stay on displaying a list of candidates for promotion of sub-inspectors to the rank of inspector in the Chandigarh Police till September 14. It has also issued a notice to the UT Inspector General of Police (IGP) to file a reply in the matter on the same date.

An execution petition in the matter was filed by eight sub-inspectors.

The eight sub-inspectors had filed the petition against the draft seniority list, which included the names of those who had been directly recruited as ASIs and promotees. The petitioners had stated that the department was promoting their juniors, which was illegal.

While disposing of the original petition, the CAT had asked the IGP to consider the petitioners’ plea and decide it within two months. It had also stayed the rest of the promotions till then.

However, even after four months, the department had not done anything and thus, the eight petitioners filed an execution petition. The petitioners stated that they had found out that for the four vacant posts of inspector, the department was about to release a list of candidates.

The CAT thus ordered a stay on any such list.
