To make the city a tourist hub, the UT Administration has planned to integrate the city’s urban infrastructure with tourism development.
During a review meeting of the ongoing and proposed projects with officials of the Tourism Department, Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO), Culture and other departments concerned, UT Tourism Secretary Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, who recently joined the Chandigarh Administration from Jammu and Kashmir, has directed officials to develop models that link Chandigarh’s well-planned urban framework and modern infrastructure with tourism promotion, thereby further strengthening the city’s unique identity.
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the rejuvenation of Sector 17, upgrading of public amenities, installation of smart signage, improved parking management and expansion of cultural activities. The strengthening of visitor facilities at key tourist attractions such as Capitol Complex, Government Museum, Sukhna Lake and Rock Garden was also reviewed. In addition, green and sustainable development-based projects, along with urban beautification initiatives, were discussed to enhance the city’s appeal.
The Sector 17 plaza has already undergone a transformation through a series of revitalisation projects. These encompassed the creation of a floor fountain, an amphitheatre, ambient lighting and projector mapping. These aimed at preserving the heritage of Sector 17 while integrating modern amenities and aesthetics, aligning with the evolving needs of visitors. The Administration wants to make Sector 17 a thriving hub for cultural events, art exhibitions and entertainment.
